The problem is "month-to-month"

OK, the problem right here is "month to month." Yes you definitely have all kinds of legal rights (without any practical way of enforcing them, unfortunately). So the problem is that the landlord is acting unreasonably and violating your rights. The other problem is that he can evict you for no reason.
It might be best to approach him and ask him nicely. Otherwise if he is a nut--and so many small landlords are nuts--he may get upset if you question his prerogative to act as "lord of the land." Without a lease you would seem to have only limited options.
