Pay a visit to the Postmaster at your local office, talk to your mailcarrier: it might be a federal offense to withhold that key.

You can't just get a new stove/fridge, but you are entitled to things that work.

Take lots of pictures, get them developed immediately, and take videos of the filth, mice, and roaches. You'll need them later.

All domiciles are covered by the Housing Maintenance Code here in NYC: report vermin infestation to HPD, Central Complaints hotline 24/7.

You might be in an "illegal apartment": read that definition.

You don't need to give her 30-days notice, but she needs to give you 30-days notice. It's the law.

Go immediately to http://www.tenant.net/ and hit the NY Tenants Info button: you need to learn your rights.

(you probably need to get out of there soon too, unless you plan on turning over all your free time to fighting this battle)
