You'd have to look up the landlord tenant laws of your state and see how much notice is required to end a tenancy at will (month to month tenancy).

The owner must be rather naive, or overly trusting, if he agreed to rent to you without even a security deposit. Maybe he made an exception for you given that he knew your husband from work.

If that's the case then the best solution is common sense and common courtesy. Explain why you moved, and offer to pay for him to advertise the home in the newspaper. He gets a new tenant, you get a nice apartment, your husband doesn't have problems with his co-worker, everyone's happy.
