Social Security numbers & deposit interest

Just one thought regarding the request for a social security number. It is true it does not appear to be required by this section of the code. However, isn't a social security number required to avoid backup withholding of interest on the security deposit? I gave my SS# to my landlord on that understanding. I am not sure what else he could do with the info.
I certainly agree that providing SS#s of persons not on the account is unnecessary.

And as far as Richard is concerned -- why not just delete his posts?
