for what its worth, i've seen maybe one actual 'for rent' sign since i've been here (brooklyn, specifically), so i'm not sure how much help it'll be in walking around. maybe in the further reaches of the outer boros they do that, but the way the market is here, LL's don't have to work very hard to get applicants. so depending on what part of town you wanna live in, your best bet really is the voice (check it online; they update their entire classifie listing the day before the paper version hits the streets, and update those almost every day). just be prepared to prove your worth on the spot, with pay stubs or other info that will show you won't be a terrible liability. good luck!
