Building keys provided by landlord-what is required?

Posted by New York Tenant on July 05, 2001 at 18:03:11:

I live in a Rent Stabilized apartment in New York city. Our building has a front door with a proprietary locking system, for which tenants cannot make duplicate keys. There are two names on the lease and one of us has lost a key.

The landlord has stated that it will take approximately a week to get another key.

What part of the law specifies the requirements for providing keys/access to the building? Is the landlord required to provide multiple keys? What's the time frame for replacing a lost key? Is it possible to get a rent abatement for time spent without a key?

Also, this creates a hardship when we have guests or have people watch our apartment while away. Is there anything legal ground under which we can compel the landlord to provide an extra key?
