Signed lease, never got a copy...

Posted by chris davis on June 25, 2001 at 13:24:37:

Hello, I signed a lease months ago and never received a copy of it from my landlord. I live in Manhattan and I am not rent stabilized. We need a copy of the lease to get renter's insurance and our landlord keeps bugging us to get insurance, but we can't get insurance without the lease! The guy is out of the country, supposedly, and we were left with a contact guy who knows nothing about the location of our lease. The whole situtation is sketchy (I won't go into further detail in this post, but I can if it helps my situation) and we wnat out of this lease. The Division of Housing and Community Renewal of New York City could not answer my question but said this was a "nebulous situation"...
Any advice would be great. Isn't the landlord legally responsible to give us a copy of the lease?
