To add to this you should ask if the LL wants to keep the busted a/c and advise that if he/she still wants it that they need to pick it up within x amount of time otherwise it will be discarded, may avert some hassling by them later. Got some slight hassling when I moved and the LL (who knew I'd replaced the a/c and bought it off me when I moved) said I shouldn't have trashed the old one, but she couldn't hassle me too much as she knew I was saving her and her partner's butt by moving (illegal apartment that DOB was sniffing around).

: You should, however, if you decide to purchase one yourself, make sure you keep the receipt in a safe place and if possible get the LL to sign a note indicating that you purchased the new a/c so there are no problems with you taking it when you go.
