True Mike, probably the only way to rent those specific apartments was to go along with the owner's fraud. But that doesn't justify participating in a con, and it proves once again that a fool who goes for a con thinking that he can get something for nothing (or in this case, probably, a cheap apartment without the hassle of really looking for one) is going to be the sorry one himself.
You're right that they are up for a very expensive fight should it come to that. "Primary tenants" will come out of the woodwork. But the three tenants in question must have known this would happen, right ? After all, they were only signing subleases.
I think the tenants who participated in this were incredibly stupid. I've never heard of a LL/T relationship that started off with a fraud materializing into anything more than that. If something seems not-quite-right or askew prior to signing the lease, its best to walk away...there's always another apartment out there.
