I just want to mention how difficult it is to find a place directly through the owner, particularly if you are not from NY. Any specific advice as to how to find these places?

: 1. don't use a broker, find a place with no extra fees directly through the owner

: 2. don't live in manhattan. unless you have lots of time (and $$$), finding an affordable place in manhattan that isn't totally gross will be hard. i recommend brooklyn for lower rents and fewer brokered apartments. when you've established yourself here for a while and are more familiar with the city, then you could find a good place in manhattan. or you might just wanna stay in Brooklyn ...
