i've heard okay things about rent-direct, they may be one of the few listing services that aren't completely shady. i've never used it myself, since if you can get a place without brokers or listing agencies, why not? you'll save some money. but rent-direct probably will save you time and allow you to find listings for stuff i'd never see.

i feel that brokers are a passive-aggressive way for LL's to only have people with lotsa money looking at their offerings. people on a tight budget won't want to deal with them and so (theoretically) they'd end up with 'better' (wealthier) tenants. i don't like that implication frankly. it's pretty easy to place an ad in the Voice and show the property to a few people. it shows a lack of commitment on the LL's part. that's just me, maybe there is some logic to it beyond that, but i'm not seeing it.
