Check your lease and make sure it was not a rent controlled or stabilized apartment. Call DHCR to get the rent history on the apartment -- just to be on the safe side.

If the apartment is non-regulated all around, then the LL has to give you 30 day notice to move. So if your rent is due to 1st and LL just gave you notice, then the notice starts on the 1st of May and ends on May 31.
