Your old landlord is probably concerned that you are going to walk out on your lease with him and is refusing to cooperate. Go tell him what you are doing and let him know that you are going to honor your lease, but want to overlap leases by a month. Once he knows that you're not planning to screw him, he'll probably be more cooperative.
