I agree with JL. I would ignore this person. What is to say that he didn't ruin the paneling afterward and try to blame you. It wouldn't make any sense in front of a judge for him to say he returned the check because it looked good and then back down. He has bitten himself in the behind. Besides, after 6 years of tenancy - some wear and tear is expected. Don't let him intimidate you. Tell him point blank he had a chance to assess damages - it is now passed. The place was acceptable at the time he gave the check back. You don't know what happened in the interim but it is of no concern to you.
