was your roommate present for this cash transfer? probably not, and her dispute of the story sounds like she is hoping to get your share of the deposit down the road. unless the deposit was extremely paltry, i doubt the former roommate would leave without getting you to 'buy her out' as it were. either way there is a portion of the deposit that does not belong to your estranged roommate. frankly she has little to do with what's between you and the next person moving in. have you talked to the new roommate? unless you have a rep for ripping people off it would be hard to frame this as you trying to pull one over on these people. try to talk to the new person, nmaybe even try to talk to the other roommate. but legally there's not much anybody can do since, if a lease exists, it sounds like the original roommate was taking some liberties with it.
