What is the rational behind a law that requires each person to pay half the rent. What difference is it to the landlord who pays the rent. As long as the person is genuinely living there they should be allowed to stay. What happens if a rich person and a poor person want to live together because they like each other, they can not live together if they both can not afford half the rent? Maybe one person likes cooking and cleaning and the other likes working outside the home. Its really none of the landlords business who pays what as long as he gets the money and both people really live there. How would the landlord know who is paying what anyway. The rich person can give the poor person the money that they would otherwise pay the landlord and then the poor person can pay the landlord.
: Assuming that this woman has lived in and maintained this apartment for many years, it is her HOME. It is wrong to ask her to move simply because she does not pay 1/2 of the rent, indeed it is unfair. If she owned the apartment and rented part of it to pay her mortgage, would that be unfair? Simply because something is deemed legal or illegal does not make it moral, ethical, fair or just.
: : Being eldery does not make someone above the law.
: : If she can't afford even 1/2 the rent, she needs further assistance than a roommate. What would happen if her roommate doesn't pay the rent on time or moves out ?
: : Tell your eldery friend about the SCRIE program, available to all low income seniors. Help her apply for affordable housing (and perhaps a smaller apartment). Are her kids aware of the situation ?
