ending month to month sublease

Posted by Erman on March 30, 2001 at 20:52:26:

hello.

when i moved into my apartment 3 years ago, i had a one year sub-lease. the apartment is not rent controlled or rent stabalized, and i sub-lease directly from the true lease holder. after the one year, things were going very well and there was no need for a further lease. it is now time for me to move out. i have been on a month to month lease and would like to know how much time in advance i should give notice that i am moving out.

it is my understanding, that i should give 30 days notice, definitely before the 1st of the month, as this is the rental period. how do i give the official notice? in writing, certified mail, etc.? is fax acceptable?

i would just like to understand what nyc law states is the appropriate action and timefame.

thank you.
