I agree -- pay with money orders. I would also send the checks by Federal Express (you can use the cheapest route, fed ex economy or second business day) which is like $6 and change, and that way, you get a signature of receipt on file with yourself and fed ex, in case your LL starts claiming he never got the money order.
Make xerox copies of everything and put in a bank safety deposit box, and make an extra copy to keep home, just to have handy.
