landlord wants tax return

Posted by jane on March 06, 2001 at 12:36:51:

I've been living in an apt. in Brooklyn for two years, and have signed on for a third. I have a friend I'd like to move in and put on the lease. However, he just got out of grad school, during which time he was financially dependant on his parents. I have no worries about him being able to pay the lease, because he has a job and access to plenty of (family) cash, but my landlord is demanding his last tax return. And since he was a student last year, obviously this is a problem. When I first moved into this apartment, I did not have to produce a tax return; I was only subject to a credit check. Can my landlord demand this? What are our options?
