Procedures Regarding Sublet

Posted by Kay on January 27, 2001 at 12:47:39:

I have been subletting an apartment for 5 months through an agency, to whom I have been paying rent. I have no lease. The agency says I have to give them 2 weeks notice to vacate. The building manager, however, insists on one month's notice, as she's told me more than once. I've rented a new apartment with a lease that starts right away. With 2x rent plus broker's fees, I can't afford to give a month's notice, but I'm concerned about giving only 2 weeks notice now. The building manager is in the building every day, and has access to my apartment. I'll be embarrassed to run into her, and I hate leaving on bad terms with her. I feel I'll have to completely vacate the apartment these last 2 weeks, even though I'll be paying for it (I'm in the process of furnishing my new place, and am not ready to move in yet). What is the right thing to do?
