Temporty displacement & compensation

Posted by Julie Gallego on January 23, 2001 at 12:30:03:

My landlord is re-doing the staircases in my complex and it is my building's turn this week. We cannot be in our apartment while this work is going on (we are on the 2nd floor) so they've put us up in a hotel. My problem is I don't think they are giving us proper compensation for this inconvenience.
1. They only gave us notice 2 days before having to be out of our apartment
2. They are not reimbursing us for any of our rent, even though we are not allowed in the apartment for 3 days and 2 nights
3. They are not giving us a food allowance, nor are they paying to have a microwave and refrigerator put in our hotel room. As a result, we have to pay to eat out during this time

I'm constructing a letter to the property owner but I wanted some advice first.
