"": I want a good used working frost free refrigerator, or at least one manufactered after 1980. How can I get my landlord to replace the substandard, broken one that I now have without cost to myself? How do I know if its leaking freon? Thanks.""

Yarrow:
How long are you going to stay in this apt??

Buy a nice spiffy new one for yourself, enjoy it while your there, take it with you when you go and replace it then with an comparable (old, used, cheap).
It's worth not having the aggrivation of DEFROSTING every 6 months -- AND frozen foods and ICE CREAM are really nice!!

Also--because we've had so many changes in Landlords/Supers over the years, if you stay in your apt long enough, who's going to remember that the old one from the 50's broke and was removed and that you chose to replace it yourself??

This goes for ANY appliance -- stoves as well (talk about gas leaks!!)

Sometimes you've just got to do what you've got to do...
