Question: do you have a lease presently? what kind of lease? rent stabilized or what? when was the last renewal? when you moved to the garden apartment, did you get a new lease or an extension on the old one? If you still have a lease and it's still in effect, he cannot suddenly call for a month to month and has to stand by the lease.
: I have been living in a private house in the Park Slope area of Brooklyn since 1988. I was first given a lease and then told in 1989 that my lease would be renewed from year to year. In 1994 I moved down to the garden apartment at the same rent I had been previously paying. My landlord, now in 2001, tell me that I am a month to month tenant and that my rent will be increased as of 2/1/2001 a total of $350.00 more and if I am not agreeable I can move. I have been a good tenant and always paid my rent on time. In addition, I believe the house is only a legal 3 family house and he has 4 rental units. HELP! What can I do?
