I live in a rent stabilized apartment building in Brooklyn. The building is over 70 years old and I have my own lease. A few weeks ago, the landlord informed me that he will bring in contractors to renovate the bathrooms in every apartment, starting with mine. "Great!" I say to myself--my bathroom could use a facelift. But here's are my concerns:
--the construction's been giong on for a week, and there's another week to go. I haven't had a tiolet or shower in my place for that long. The apartment is covered with powder-like dust, and is a general pain in the ass. It's cold out and I have to shower at friends' homes and use the toilet at the local bar, which closes at 2am.
--my landlord still expects the full rent. My apartment's been unlivable for 2 weeks--am I still obligated to pay the full month's rent?
--is he allowed to raise my rent when the renovations are done?
I haven't signed anything, nor did I ask for these renovations. I wasn't consulted on them; they were just arranged for me. Bitter-sweet, but are there any policies I should be aware of?
