late lease renewal question

Posted by Tess Elliott on January 07, 2001 at 14:16:56:

I have a lease as a renter in a coop building in New York CIty. My lease is due for renewal at the end of this month (01/31/01). Problem is: I thought I mailed it in, and found it yesterday. It was due in 60 days as of the date on the paper of 9/15/00. I had signed it back in November, agonizing over whether to get a one year or two year lease because of the large increases. I plan to overnight express it with my rent check tomorrow morning, but am I in trouble? It is a rent stabilized apartment in a 15 floor building and now I am full of panic; am supporting my niece and her infant son & we live paycheck to paycheck. I have been here for over ten years and am in terror over losing my home or being suddenly charged a much higher rent. Can anyone tell me: if my renewal arrives before the expiring of my current lease, will it go into effect. Or do I need to get a lawyer and pray for mercy??? Can anyone advise me? I had planned to call and try to find this information in a city agency tomorrow, but won't get a wink's sleep until I find out.
