roomate is also landlord, and taking advantage of power disymmetry

Posted by rita on December 24, 2000 at 22:17:17:

I am a month to month rentert living in a room of someone else's apartment; I did not know this person owned the apartment when I moved in, but thought she was looking for a roomate. Now, I am in a situation where she is excercising a great deal of her power as the owner of the unit.
I can't seem to find information with regards to the legal relationship between myself and my landlord-roomate. My complaint(aside from some mild harrassment and invasion of my privacy by entering my room without permission) is that she is leaving on a holiday and plans to have a 'friend' unknown to me come and stay here while she is away. I am not too keen on this situation, and wonder if there is anything that I can do in this situation, as prevention or remedy. Can I legally lock out this person? There is a chain on the door.
What do you think?
