organize!

Posted by chelsea on November 26, 2000 at 23:03:53:

I posted this elsewhere on the list in response to a message asking about organizations that might help organize a tenants' association, but I'm reposting here because it might be helpful to others:

Here are some places to start, if you haven't already been in touch with them.

The "NY Tenants Organizations" section of Tenant Net
(http://tenant.net/Tengroup/index.html) lists these first two:

1.

Metropolitan Council on Housing
Listen to Housing Notebook, Mondays at 7 p.m., on WBAI, 99.5 FM
Metropolitan Council on Housing ("Met Council") is a city-wide membership tenant
organization that has been active for more than thirty years. Met Council's monthly
newspaper Tenant/Inquilino, edited by Steven Wishnia, covers a broad array of
topics of interest to tenants. Selected articles are online at TenantNet.

Met Council is located at:

Met Council on Housing
64 Fulton Street, #401
New York, NY 10038
Tel: (212)693-0550 fax: (212)693-0553

2.

The West Side Tenants Union has been existence for over two decades, faithfully
counselling people on tenant rights. Volunteer counselors and lawyers help tenants
with everything from filing the proper forms to the intricacies of navigating housing
court. Services are free of charge, but we do ask that those who come to the clinic
join WSTU, if possible, as we are solely supported by membership dues.
Annual Membership is $15, and $7 annually for senior citizens, students and SSI
recipients.

West Side Tenants Union
200 West 72nd Street, Room 63
New York, N.Y. 10023
Phone: (212)595-1274

Clinic Hours: Tuesdays and Thursdays 2 - 5 PM
Tuesdays and Wednesdays 6 - 7:45 PM

Also, for Northern Manhattan/Inwood, there's:

3.
Northern Manhattan Improvement Corporation. They have the start of a web site at
www.nmic.org You could email them for a phone number, or maybe someone else on
this list can provide it.

--------------

You should also check out "Organizing" on Tenant.net, for information on starting a
tenants organization:

Good luck!!!!
