Security deposit if you break lease?

Posted by sally on November 02, 2000 at 17:26:49:

Hi - I live in Brooklyn, NY. I don't have any rent regulation. I am looking to break a 2 month old lease, due to a change in my financial situation. I have a written lease and there are about 35 units in my building, which is owned by a corporation. What is the best way to break the lease without a huge hassle and do I have the rights to my security deposit or do I forfeit it? When I called my landlords office to ask they said they would keep the deposit if I broke my lease. Is this legal?
