What are our rights?

Posted by LisaM on October 10, 2000 at 13:34:38:

Our lease was up at the end of October. Our landlord called us on September 28th to tell us he was increasing the rent by 10% for the next year. Now, our apartment is not rent stabilized or controlled, so I understand he can do whatever he wants. BUT doesn't he need to give us some type of notice-not 2 days?? We told him we were going to look for somewhere else to live and he tells us he wants us out by December 1st. Nothing is in writing as of now. We sent him the rent with the increase for October but are not going to be able to be out by December.

My questions are:
What are our rights in terms of him giving us reasonable notice he wanted to raise the rent?
What are our rights in terms of him giving telling us we need to be out by 12/00?
What are we obliged to do in terms of showing the place to potential new tenants?
What happens with eviction?

Any help would be appreciated!!

Thanks!
