From reading previous posts, I understand that it is not my LL's responsibility to provide window security gates. This is true in all cases, I'm assuming as I cannot find any info to state otherwise.

I live in Manhattan with two windows with fire escape facing street. There is a building next to mine with a roof that is less than one foot from my fire escape. So, I'm feeling nervous about my security.

Can anyone provide some guidance on where to purchase and get someone to install these security gates? How expensive are the gates and installation usually? Do I need to ask my LL? Since I will probably move out in a couple years, can I add these as an apartment improvement?
