You didn't say if you were under a lease or not.

Assuming you are a month to month tenant, they can raise the rent on 30 days notice. Can be for any reason or no reason at all. More people in apartment does mean more expenses for LL, you two will have to decide if the apartment is worth it or if you should move elsewhere.

If you are presently under a lease then your rent can not be increased. Of course once the lease is up it can.

: my girlfriend moved in and my rent was raised from $950 to $1100. This follows a raise from $900 to $950 a year ago. the building is not under rent regulations that i know of.

: they justified the increase because there are now 2 of us. is this legal? i think it is excessive. is this a common and accepted practice?
