Security deposit is not the last month's rent

They're right. A security deposit is a deposit; not your final month's rent. Try to make arrangements to have your apartment inspected by management, turn in your keys, and get your deposit back on the same day you move out. If you live in a building with 6 or more units, as you say you do, then you are entitled to any accrued interest on the deposit, less 1% for the owner's expenses.
