You could take this to small claims court (unless another court has jurisdiction over landlord/tenant matters in your state). You would need to prove that you rented the apartment -- lacking a lease, you could show cancelled rent checks or money order receipts. There are some self-help legal books from nolo press at that you might read to prepare yourself.

Whether it is worth the time and effort and fees to go to court to recover the $200+ or just move on and take loss is up to you to decide.
