My girlfriend and I live in Cobble Hill, Brooklyn in the garden apartment of a 4-floor brownstone; it's neither rent-controlled nor -stabilized. We took the apartment in 11/98, signing a one-year lease; the landlord never sent us a renewal (I'm realizing now I should have demanded one!).
This morning I left my apartment to find the other tenants discussing the letters we'd just received: all of us, apparently like my gf & I without leases, were being served enormous increases, to go into effect October 1, 2000.
Our current rent is $1650; the letter informs us it'll be $2,100 on 10/1.
Does anyone here have any advice on dealing with this? We are very unhappy at the prospect of moving, and there's no way we'll be ready to leave in one month. There's also no way in hell I'm paying $450 extra.
Thanks for sharing your time and expertise.
Cheers,
Ian Wilker
