Co-Lessee Witholding Her Portion/Joint Liability Clause

Posted by Carly Skinner on July 01, 2000 at 20:21:34:

I desperately need support in finding a way to legally make by cousin pay her portion of the rent. Our lease declares my cousin, myself, and a third roomate jointly liable for the full amount of the rent. My other roomate and I cannot jeopardize our good credit rating for my integrity-lacking cousin, nor can we afford to pay her portion of the rent. Can we sue her in court for her portion? Is she at all responsible for and bound by that lease or can she just screw us over with no repercussions? Can we sue her for the severe financial inconveniences (e.g. moving expense, lease breaking fees etc.) she has inflicted upon us? What if she refuses to attempt to find a replacement for herself, and refuses to release herself on the lease? Please help !!!
-Carly
P.S. we live in Orlando, FL and she is currently staying in Wheaton, IL
