: Hi Folks- Any feedback on this situation would be most appreciated!

: My partner and i have verbally agreed to renting an apartment in Providence, RI.

Since they have not given you a lease, you might be able to back out. Then again, verbal month-to-month leases are valid. Here in NY, leases for more than one year (or is it one year and more?) MUST be written; something to do with frauds in contracts, not with landlord-tenant laws specifically.

Start your research here:

THE RHODE ISLAND LANDLORD-TENANT HANDBOOK
http://www.lori.state.ri.us/landlord/
Rhode Island Commission for Human Rights
10 Abbott Park Place
Providence, RI 02903-3768
(401) 277-2661

For the actual laws, if you're that adventuresome:

Rhode Island CHAPTER 34-18
Residential Landlord and Tenant Act
http://www.rilin.state.ri.us/Statutes/TITLE34/34-18/INDEX.HTM

Also: try the Providence website: might find a local reference.
And be a dear: post the answer when you find it!
