withholding last month's rent

Posted by hardy on June 16, 2000 at 14:14:23:

What's the conventional wisdom on withholding your last month's rent and going out on your security deposit, as long as there's no damage in the apartment (and you have the pictures to prove it)? Recommended, or not? How miserable can your ex-landlord make you in this situation, if he decides to get petty? And is it best to just leave, or give him some notice or tell him to use the deposit? (This is a legal rental in Manhattan in a non-stabilized apartment [co-op], for which I have a lease.)
