There are several agencies in the Rochester area that may be able to assist a person who meets specific income qualifications in obtaining free legal services. Because of the possibility of cutbacks in funding, please check with individual agencies to verify their current status in providing the following services.

The following five agencies now share office space at 80 St. Paul St. to better serve those who need free or low cost legal services by offering five services under one roof. (Except for Main West Attorneys at Law Inc., the following legal services are free to those with gross annual incomes below a specified amount based on the federal poverty level. For an individual, that equals $9,338.)

MONROE COUNTY LEGAL ASSISTANCE CORP.

for some types of civil matters: public benefits, landlord-tenant, disability claims, Social Security and special education.
This group serves residents of Monroe, Livingston, Ontario, Seneca, Wayne and Yates counties.

VOLUNTEER LEGAL SERVICES PROJECT OF MONROE COUNTY INC.

finds attorneys who will volunteer on a no-fee basis to handle certain types of civil matters, including divorce, custody, child support, bankruptcy and eviction. Low income clients are provided free counseling on consumer credit matters, including bankruptcy and creditors rights.
This group holds debt collection clinics twice a month.

provides training, research and litigation support to legal advocacy groups around the state.

FARMWORKER LEGAL SERVICES OF NEW YORK, INC.

represents migrant and seasonal farm workers.

MAIN WEST ATTORNEYS AT LAW INC.

handles family law matters including divorce, child support, visitation and Family Court, landlord-tenant disputes and wills on a sliding-scale fee basis for people with incomes slightly higher than eligibility for free services.
