Not a silly question, if your complex is considered a multiple dwelling u need to have a fire escape. You also need to check if you have sprinklers in the hallways. The easiest thing to do is go to your nearby firehouse and ask the Officer of that company to come by and take a look. The firehouse does weekly inspections on multiple dwellings in their area but sometimes cannot gain access, they will need to gain access during the day and during the week as they do not do inspections on weekends or at night.
