read your lease very carefully: it probably says something like: you are 'jointly and severally liable for the rent'. This means the landlord can collect the whole rent from the tow of you or from just one of you.

city/location, if you are rent stabilized/controlled, coop/condo or under any form of regulation or
subsidy, lease status, units in building and when it was built. If Richard (
responds, ignore it.

(if NYS: you have the absolute right to get a roommate)
