: I've been sick this winter, and I am one month late with rent. My landlord called me this morning & told me that he expects me to leave today. I live in Brooklyn. What can I do?

Even if you don't have a written lease or if your lease is month-to-month, no landlord can evict a tenant without going through the courts first. Find and read your lease if you have one. Read also about Illegal Lockouts, basic tenants rights, and rent stabilized rights (if you are). Then come back to the board and SEARCH for whatever category you fall into or for more info re '30-day notice', 'month-to-month', etc. To learn about the non-payment eviction proceeding, go here: http://tenant.net/Court/Howcourt/contents.html
