Fumes...another dirty little trick, maybe?

Posted by BASS on March 31, 2000 at 14:00:00:

Here it is:

It's 2am...wife is woken out of a sound sleep...fumes are strong, smell strongly of gas...we check the stove, etc., nothing. We open the door to the living room where windows and door have remained closed, shut...a blast of gas-smelling air, strong enough to drop you to your knees, comes gushing out at us. Woh!!! What to do, I mean most everyone is asleep in this building at 2am? But we don't like people to blow up real good...Smell is getting worse...we've got the windows and door open to vent...it's irritating the eyes, the throat, breathable air is getting a little scarce...we go for it and we call Con Ed...they send two guys with an analyzer...they are in the apartment doing their thing within twenty minutes! Great! Not really...their little black box with the digital read-out found nothing toxic in the fumes...shoot! But the Con Ed guys both admit that there IS something stinky floating around that smells very much like gas, and it's very strong, and they don't know what the hell it is! They even woke up the next door neighbor just in case, and ran their well paid noses up and down the cracks at other apartment's doors on lower floors below ours...Nothing!

If this had been a first time thing, my wife and I, who have lived in this same apartment for 30 years, and know the building pretty well would wait to get on this board, and rail at the situation of Landlords and their devious tactics to oust Rent Stabilized tenants etc. But this was one more occurrance, in what seems to be molding itself into an ongoing pattern. So far, we've had the DEP, Housing&Health, the Fire Department (five engines worth...they take this fume thing very seriously here in New York City) and now the wee-hours arm of Con Ed here to visit (very understanding people too), none of them finding so much as a spec of toxic anything...even with their analyzers and finely tuned nostrils.

Here it comes (and on top of everything you got to nag you in your lives):

We're asking those of you who read this board to please answer our request to reply to this account, relating one of your own that is similar in nature. Why? To, if possible, amass a considerable number of true--possibly documented with one or the other of New York City's investigative departments like Housing & Health etc. as we have, though this isn't necessary--incidents. Why? If there are enough incidents, maybe we can develope some correlation. Maybe we could initiate some type of investigation into these types of occurances, and establish yet another clear pattern of landlord harrassment. If this all souds like too much to believe, then forget it. But if it hits you and, in fact, strikes a chord...let's get on with it, then!

Thanks for any input, no matter what it is...BASS
