: : My daughter is about to rent an apt. in Brooklyn. The landlord wants a $4,000 deposit all in cash, and monthly rent in cash. Money orders or bank checks are not accepable. Is this a standard procedure? It makes us nervous. How do we evaluate the risk of this transaction? For us Vermont people that's a lot of cash to give someone you don't know. Thanks for oyur advice.

Don't take the apt. When we first rented ours, the landlords didn't want personal checks; money orders were accepted. Then when we paid by POSTAL money order, they told us: "out of state money orders don't clear fast enough." Goes to show you how ignorant those landlords were-postal money orders are accepted anywhere within the 50 u.s. States....! After that, they wanted cash, and once they didn't give us a receipt. We told them in a letter: No receipt?? No rent. We never had a problem getting a rent receipt after that.
