Window guards are required by landlords only for the purpose of protecting children from falling out of windows. However you must have children AND these window guards are not burglar proof. They simply keep children from falling out of open windows and are very light weight.

The landlord is not, in any way, responsible for installing security into your windows. You can talk with them about compensation if you install them, but don't expect compensation automatically, he is not required to compensate you, it would only be for the sake of good buisness. In fact I know a tenant who installed bars without a landlords permission and when the tenant moved out the landlord not only did not compensate the tenant he charged him from his security deposit for damage that the locksmith did to the window during the installation of the bars.

These bars would cost you about 200.00 per window and you must determine if the windows are legal egress. If they are then the proper bars must be installed.
