forgot to mention: in NY state, and maybe others, you can "break your lease" with a 30-day notice and a sublet candidate. how-to is spelled out in theb law itself: there are earlier emails with more details or look here: http://www.tenant.net/Rights/

you could simply ask your lease-mate and your landlord to cancel the lease, they will both have to agree. but I would not do a thing without a lawyer: there's a lot at stake here, a lot of money and a lot of potential trouble.

and get in touch with Victim Services: there's a hotline and a website (call the police, not 911, if you can't find them): consider taking out an Order of Protection against your lease-mate.
