I'm moving from NYC to UK. Break lease??

Posted by cityjen on February 06, 2000 at 11:38:59:

Help.

I recently got engaged and am moving to London (timeline, April 2000). (Yay!!!)

I currently have a lease on an apartment which ends on Aug. 31, 2000.
Ideally, I'd like to just break the lease so I could move to the UK without
any lingering hassles. Can I do that? (It's in the West Village, a prime location,
so it's likely he wouldn't lose any rent for an empty place).

Alternately (not my first choice), can I sublet for five months (I'd be "traveling" during that time)
then not renew my lease on August 31? Would I get charged more? Could the landlord refuse?

I've been in my apartment for a little over 3 years.I've paid a security deposit in the amount
of one month's reant. The owners are annoying--they
once tried (unsuccessfully) to take me to housing court over what they deemed
non-payment. (My checks had been cashed).

So, needless to say, I'm not one of their favorite
tenants so they're not likely to cut me any friendly slack...

Thanks, Jennifer
