I live in Yonkers, N.Y., in a legal two family home. I am renting in one of the apartments with my wife and three kids. The landlord lives in the basement in a third apartment, which is illegal. I expressed my concern with her that if something happened in the house that was the fault of the third illegal apartment (eg. a stove fire) that the insurance would not cover the damages. Now with my concern she is beginning to harrase me. Is there any legal action to get her to remove the third illegal apartment, or for me to leave and to recieve some compensation for my inconvenience for leaving early, or can she sue me for breaking my lease early. Thank you.
