Taking ex-landlord to court? How?

Posted by Shara on January 19, 2000 at 22:45:15:

My ex-landlord has failed to return my $2000 deposit. He refuses to tell me why, although it has been suggested by his secretary to my ex-roommate that it is because we neglected to give him 30 days written notice before moving out. From what I've read, it seems to me that month-to-month tenants in NYC (which is what I was) are not so obligated (can someone confirm this?). He also hinted to my ex-roommate before we moved out that he was anticipating witholding our money for some sort of damages (we didn't damage anything). It has been over two months since we vacated the place.

It's becoming clear that I'm going to have to sue him. Do I go to small claims court, or housing court?

Also, what must I do to prepare? What should I know? What should I bring? What is the procedure?

Thanks!
