1994 Boulder Tenants' Guide

Helpful Hints and Answers to Typical Questions

Before looking for a place to live, you should decide what is most important to you!cost, having your own room, being within walking distance of the campus, cooking facilities, a quiet place to study, having a chance to meet other students, recreational facilities, etc. This ahead-of-time thinking will save you time when you look for housing.

We recommend that you leave your pets at home. Probably 85 percent of the rentals in Boulder do not allow pets. The places that do allow pets often require an extra deposit and sometimes charge extra rent. Anyway, taking good care of a pet, especially a dog, may not mix well with student life. Think about whether you will be able to give your pet the time it needs.

If you don't want to cook, you may purchase an off campus meal plan to eat in the residence halls. These are sold by the semester and include a 5-days-a-week plan and a 7-days-a-week plan. For rates and further information, contact the University Housing Office (Hallett 64, 492-6580). Also, the "A LA CARTE" flexible meal plan allows students to purchase discounted coupon books redeemable at six dining areas on campus. For information on this plan, call 492-6284 or go to the University Memorial Center, room 136.

If you are married or if you have children, you may wish to contact the University Family Housing Office (1350 20th Street, Boulder, CO 80302, 492-6384) for information and application forms. University Family Housing apartments are less expensive than off-campus rentals. Reservations are taken on a first-come, first-served basis.University Family Housing may also have a small number of apartments available to single graduate students.

Unless you've arranged housing in advance, travel light. Leave as many belongings at home as possible, and have them shipped to you later after you find a place to live.
