Rent Talks Break Off

New York 1 Cable, June 13, 1997

Governor Pataki, State Senate Majority Leader Joseph Bruno, and Assembly Speaker Sheldon Silver held separate, late afternoon press conferences to tell reporters that all sides talked through the day, but that no deal on rent regulations has been reached. The law expires Sunday.

The three won't be talking Saturday because Silver is observing the Jewish Sabbath. So they will not be getting together again until Sunday. But the governor says aides to the three sides might meet tomorrow. Pataki also says he cannot extend the law by executive order.

Silver is seeking a one month extension of the current law. Bruno says that's unacceptable.

All three said there's progress because they're talking.

Bruno wants to phase out rent laws. Silver wants to leave them the way they are. Recently, Bruno has moved to a nearly identical position with the Governor. Pataki wants vacancy decontrol.
